Air Temperature

Slide_AirTemperature.png

Accurate temperature monitoring is critical to understanding and managing urban climate dynamics, especially in the context of rising global temperatures and increasing frequency of extreme events. However, due to the limited number of in situ air temperature monitoring stations, a significant gap exists in understanding detailed temperature patterns across cities.

To address this problem, we utilize satellite-derived land surface temperature (LST) data, which provides comprehensive spatial coverage across urban terrain. We integrate machine learning techniques with LST data to reconstruct daily maximum and minimum temperatures for areas that cannot be directly measured.
We also apply spatial interpolation methods to estimate air temperatures in unmonitored regions. We trained a machine learning model with satellite data and in situ observations to create a seamless spatial map of air temperature. Compared to the smoothed spatial distribution of the traditional geostatistical model, Cokriging, our model was found to better represent heterogeneous spatial patterns. This methodology enhances our ability to effectively monitor air temperature, helping us better understand and manage heat risks in cities.
